Cairo:
African champions Al Ahly were the sixth and last recipient of an invite from FIFA to appear at the Club World Championship on Tuesday. Based in the heart of Cairo, Al Ahly - which means "The National" - have become Africa's leading club with a simply astonishing record which has taken them to the FIFA Club World Championships in Japan next month. Al Ahly were firm favourites to win this year's CAF Champions League after a record breaking run in their previous domestic season - winning 24 and drawing 2 of their 26 games played. True to form, the Egyptians duly won through to the final of their continental competition, beating Tunisian outfit 3-0 on aggregate to be crowned kings of Africa. Now, after going more than 50 games unbeaten, they have the chance to display their talents on a wider stage, opening the tournament with a quarterfinal tie against Saudi Arabian side and Asian champions - Al Ittihad. If Al Ahly beat Al Ittihad they will then face Brazilian giants Sao Paulo in the semifinals in Tokyo on 14 December. The African Football Confederation (CAF) voted Al Ahly the continent's 'Team of the Century' back in 2000 after claiming over 30 domestic championships and their glory on the continental stage. Now a chance awaits to add an extra special trophy to their already burgeoning Cabinet. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
