Spanish club Villarreal defeated Everton 2-1 Tuesday at Goodison Park in the first leg of the third round of Champions League qualifying. The second leg is in Spain in two weeks and the winner of the tie will reach the group stage of Europe's top club competition. Villarreal, which finished third in Spain last season behind Barcelona and Real Madrid, had first-half goals from Luciano Figueroa (27th) and Josico Moreno (45th). Everton striker James Beattie pulled one back for the English club in the 42nd. Figueroa gave Villarreal the lead after the Argentine broke down the right flank and, from a sharp angle, drove the ball into the back of the net. Beattie leveled by poking the ball home after missing a header with half time nearing. But midfielder Moreno headed Villarreal back in front in first-half injury time from a right-flank cross.
