Olympique Marseille dominated the second half of the second leg of their Intertoto Cup 'semi-final' to beat S S Lazio 3-0 at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille and 4-1 on aggregate. S S Lazio of Italy walked into a cauldron of an atmosphere in the Stade Velodrome in Marseille on Wednesday. With the scores level at 1-1 after the first leg at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome last week, there was all to play for, including a possible place in this year's UEFA Cup. Disappointing start It was Lazio who threatened first. Fabio Firmani's crossfield ball was dummied by Aparecido Cesar before Fabio Liverani's chip was parried onto the crossbar and over by Marseille goalkeeper Cedric Carasso after just two minutes. The only other chance of a disappointing first half fell to Andres Mendoza, but he was denied by Matteo Sereni. The second half was a different story. In the 54th minute, from a Marseille counter-attack, Wilson Oruma picked up the ball in midfield and ran at the retreating Lazio defence. He cut inside and struck his shot against the far post in the 54th minute. Counter attack That proved to be the pattern for five minutes of brilliance from Marseille. From another counter-attack, Liverani lost possession to Oruma in midfield and he ran at the Lazio back four once more before drawing a man and rolling the ball into the path of Mamadou Niang. Niang fired a left-foot drive into the far corner of the net to open the scoring. It was 1-0 to Marseille after 60 minutes and it was appreciated by former goalkeeper Fabien Barthez. Then, just two minutes later, centre-back Frederic Dehu and man-of-the-match Oruma broke up an attack before the latter beat the offside trap with a brilliant defence-splitting pass into the path of Andres Mendoza. He duly made it 2-0 with a fine finish after 62 minutes. Great play Three minutes later, the match and 'semi-final' was over as a contest when Rahmane Barry and Demetrius Ferreira combined before Ferreira played a great crossfield ball into the path of Franck Ribery. He controlled the ball and fired past Matteo Sereni to beat him at his near post. It was 3-0 to Marseille (4-1 on aggregate) after 65 minutes and that's the way it finished. Marseille now meet Deportivo La Coruna of Spain on one of the three Intertoto 'finals'. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
