London: With England's World Cup opener just two weeks away, Friday's 3-0 friendly win over Peru gave manager Roy Hodgson a chance to run the rule over the candidates for a starting place in Brazil.

After scoring the winner in England's last friendly against Denmark, the Liverpool striker has emerged as Hodgson's preferred partner for Wayne Rooney and this lively display, capped by a sublime 32nd minute opener, surely cemented his place.
