Lisbon:The countdown for Euro 2004 is over. The championship, considered a mini World Cup with just South America missing, kicks off in Portugal today. This is the first time that Portugal is hosting a major international sporting event. While, the beautiful city of Lisbon will host the Euro finals on July 4, matches will be played at seven other venues. Fans have already camped all over in Portugal. France favourties Defending champions France are tipped to be the favourites to win the tournament. With players like Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry and Robert Pires and an 18 match unbeaten record, majority of the people think France will have no trouble defending the title they won in 2000. However, England, Germany, Italy and indeed hosts Portugal would all beg to differ. Meanwhile, the police in Portugal are making preparations to ensure an incident-free tournament.
