Alejandro Sabella Expected to Leave as Argentina's Coach

Alejandro Sabella took over as Argentina coach from Diego Maradona in 2011 and mentored his team to the FIFA World Cup 2014 final recently.

Argentina's coach Alejandro Sabella has been considered an able mentor but there were reports of rift with Lionel Messi during the FIFA World Cup in Brazil recently.


Buenos Aires: Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella is expected to resign Wednesday, ending weeks of speculation about his future following his country's loss in the World Cup final.

The Argentine Football Association said Sabella will hold a news conference on Wednesday. The federation did not confirm his resignation, but local media report he is leaving. (Also read: Maradona rips Argentina's World Cup 2014 performance)

Gerard Martino and Jose Pekerman have been mentioned as possible replacements. Martino coached Paraguay's national team and most recently Barcelona. Pekerman coached Argentina at the 2006 World Cup and took Colombia to this year's quarterfinals.
