Milan:Brazil defensive midfielder Emerson will return to Italy after a year in Spain, transferring from Real Madrid to AC Milan for a reported euro 5 million.
Both Milan and Madrid announced the deal in separate statements on their websites.
The 31-year-old Emerson, together with Italy's World Cup winning captain Fabio Cannavaro, transferred to Madrid from Juventus in July 2006 following the appointment of Fabio Capello in a euro 20 million deal.
The midfielder, who has six goals in 77 games with the Brazilian national team since 1997, including the 1998 and 2006 World Cups, played 27 league games as Madrid won the league although it proved a largely unhappy spell.
On several occasions during home games he was jeered by Madrid supporters dissatisfied with his performances.
In February, Emerson reportedly refused to play as a substitute during the European Champions League match with Bayern Munich although he later denied the claim.
Following Madrid's dismissal of Capello soon afterward, Bernd Schuster took charge of the team and declared Emerson expendable since the club had four other players who occupied a similar position.
Emerson joined Juventus in 2004 after a four-year spell with AS Roma and won Italian league titles in 2005 and 2006, although Juventus was stripped of the honors for its part in the country's match-fixing scandal. He previously played for Brazil's Gremio and Bayer Leverkusen.
