India today suffered their second successive defeat and went out of contention in the AFC Under-17 Football championship being played in Shizuoka, Japan. The Indian colts, who had lost their opening Group C encounter against Iran on Sunday, paid for some sloppy defence to go down 1-2 to Kuwait at the Nihondaira stadium, according to information received here. The Indians, yet to open their account, have no chance of making it to the quarterfinal stage with just one match against Malaysia remaining. Group leaders Iran booked their berth in the last eight with a thumping 5-0 win over Malaysia while Kuwait, with four points, now just need a draw in their last league match against Iran on Thursday for a place in the knock-out stage. Desperate to secure full three points to keep their hopes alive, India went for an outright win against Kuwait. They could have come out sharing the spoils but for a defensive lapse just two minutes from time. The defenders misread a pass from the left and the unmarked Fadhel ensured that the Indians had to pay for the mistake with a clinical finish. Earlier, Kuwait took the lead through Al Jaser in the 58th minutes but the Indians restored parity eight minutes later when Hnamte Laltanpuia found the net. India had a couple of opportunities to take the lead in the first half but a long ranger from Ong Tshering Lepcha hit the crossbar and soon after Sielphaw Henry Gangte failed to beat the Kuwait custodian from close.
