Lima:
Argentina, on a high from its Olympic gold medal in Athens, entered Saturday's match knowing they could bypass Brazil and move atop the South American World Cup pool with victory over Peru in the capital, Lima.
Mauro Rosales started the scoring in the 13th minute, with a low, blistering 21-metre shot top that put the visitors in the lead.
Both squads were reduced to 10 men moments from half-time when Peru's Flavio Maestri and Argentina's Cristian Gonzalez were ejected after they got into an aggre
ssive argument.
Peru came back with the equaliser in the 61st on a shot by Jorge Soto. But Argentina took back the advantage in the 65th with a spectacular header by Fabricio Coloccini.
That was followed in injury time by a right-footed blast by substitute Juan Pablo Sorin to seal the 3-1 away victory. The victory lifted Argentina on top of the South America race with 15 points from eight games, one more game and two points ahead of Brazil, which will play Colombia on Sunday. Peru was 10th overall with nine points. (AP)
