Osnabruck:
The presidency of the German soccer federation will be split between two men for the first time in the organization's 104-year history under a move approved today designed to avoid a power struggle heading into the World Cup in 2006. Theo Zwanziger, backed by the country's amateur teams, was given a share of the office with incumbent Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, a FIFA executive committee member and largely seen as the voice of the professional Bundesliga. The general assembly of the six million member federation approved the power-sharing agreement, which is to last until 2006, 249-4. The move came after the amateur division, which includes everything from youth to women's sides, rebelled against Mayer-Vorfelder earlier this year. They complained the 71-year-old former head of VfB Stuttgart was too autocratic and neglected their interests in favor of the professional clubs and international politics. Zwanziger, however, said he hopes to represent all of German soccer and not just the amateur ranks. The former treasurer of the Bavaria soccer is expected to assume sole control after the 2006 World Cup. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
