Sao Paulo:

Corinthians, badly in need of a few points to revive their flagging Brazilian championship campaign, entertained Sao Paulo at the Morumbai on Sunday - just the sort of team they have to beat if they are to be considered serious title contenders. But in a dull first half from both sides, it was one of the goalkeepers who came closest to opening the scoring, Sao Paulo's Rogerio Ceni sending in a 20-metre free kick on 36 minutes that had his opposite number, Fabio Costa, at full stretch. The home side's only chance of note in the opening period came from a clever piece of thinking from midfielder Fabio Baiano, who played a one-two from his own free kick three minutes before the break and almost set up a chance for Corinthians strikers Gil and Jo. The ball subsequently fell to central defender Felipe Alvim, but his shot was stopped on the line by Rogerio Ceni. Restless halftime Goalless at half time, the fans from both sides of the city were getting a little restless, but if anything the second half was as negative as the first as the midfield formations cancelled each other out. It was not until the last ten minutes that the game opened up, Corinthinas midfielder Fabinho had to clear off his line following a free kick from Sao Paulo's Gabriel in the 83rd minute. Four minutes later Corinthians substitute Alberto, who was lucky to be able to stay on the pitch following a head injury, got on the end of a four man move and almost surprised the Sao Paulo goalkeeper. On the verge of stoppage time, Sao Paulo's Danilo could have stolen the points with a rasping left foot drive across Fabio Costa, but the ball eluded both 'keeper and post and the game finished 0-0. It was a result that neither side wanted, as they now slip further behind leaders Santos. Corinthians now lie tenth in the table, ten points behind Santos, while Sao Paulo are fifth, eight points off the pace. (AP)
