Klagenfurt, Austria:
Yasiyuki Konno and Yuji Nakazawa missed penalties for Japan, while Martin Hiden didn't convert for Austria.
Austria, which will co-host next year's European Championship, had not won in six matches so far this year.
Japan dominated much of the game, and Tatsuya Tanaka's rebound hit the bar in the 23rd minute, after Austria goalkeeper Helge Payer saved a free kick by midfielder Yasuhito Endo.
Yuichi Komano and Kengo Nakamura also had good chances to score in the second half, but failed to convert.
Austria, playing without captain Andreas Ivanschitz and Martin Stranzl, looked weak on offense and created few scoring chances.
It was the first match in the newly built Woerthersee Stadium, one of four Austrian venues that will be used for the Euro 2008 tournament.
Earlier Friday, Switzerland defeated Chile 2-1 in the opening match of the tournament.
The event ends next Tuesday, when Switzerland meets Japan and Austria plays Chile.
