Integrated within the tiles of the outer layer of the stadium will be special lighting elements, meaning that the external facade can be used for lighting displays.
Improved amenities include mechanical escalators to the upper levels, while a roof will be constructed to cover the seating areas.
During construction the stadium will keep functioning without major disruptions.
Club president Joan Laporta said he was happy to see Foster embracing the task of redisigning the stadium as a personal challenge.
The ceremony was preceded by the inauguration of an exhibition that commemorates the 50th anniversary of Europe's largest stadium.
