Moscow:
England now must beat Croatia in their last qualifier and pray for the other results to go their way.
Wayne Rooney gave the Three Lions a perfect start with a spectacular volley in 29th minute. The Manchester United forward had been worried about his international form of late but this goal showed that it was Russia who needed to be worried.
Steven Gerrard's struggles for both club and country continue. The Liverpool captain further added to his misery when he missed an open chance to extend England's advantage. The miss would come back to haunt them.
Rooney then turned from hero to villain after 69 minutes, bringing down Konstanin Zurianov to concede a penalty. Replay's though clearly showed the number 17 being bought down outside the box.
Roman Pavluchenko made no mistake from the spot as Russia equalised but England were still the favourites given that they had beaten Russia 3-0 at home.
Paul Robinson had been criticised of late for performances as England number 1 and did his cause no good when he failed to deal with Alexei Berezutsky's shot in the 73rd minute. Pavulenchko scored his second of the night.
Russia held on for the 2-1 win that virtually ensures their trip to Austria and Switzerland for Euro 2008 but England now need Russia to self destruct like a Molotov cocktail if they are to have any chance of going through.
