Rio de Janeiro:
World Champion Valentino Rossi secured his sixth pole position of the season in final qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix on Friday. The Honda rider, currently leading the 2003 standings, clocked 1 minute, 49.038 seconds to break the qualifying lap record, three tenths of a second ahead of Italian compatriot Loris Capirossi and almost eight tenths ahead of Spaniard Sete Gibernau, the only man who can seriously challenge Rossi in the race for the 2003 championship. Guibernau later crashed trying to steal first place, but will be able to compete in tomorrow's race. In the 250cc discipline, Tony Elias of Spain took his Aprilia round the 4.933-kilometre (3.065 Mile) Nelson Piquet Circuit, in one minute 53.457 seconds to take pole position, while compatriot Daniel Pedrosa did the same on a Honda in the 125cc class in one minute 58.052 seconds.
