Jerez:
Three-time Champ Car champion Sebastien Bourdais is hoping his test drive for Scuderia Toro Rosso will lead to a move to Formula One sometime in the future. "I will defend my title in Champ Car in 2007 with Newman-Haas,'' Bourdais said Wednesday. "This test will make it possible to get an idea of the situation, and I am hoping that is the start of something concrete, namely a race drive.'' The 27-year-old Frenchman finished his first of three days of testing in the team's STR1 car at the 4.42-kilometer (2.748-mile) Jerez circuit on Wednesday. He had a best time of 1 minute 22.512 seconds in 82 laps with a restricted V10 engine. Renault driver Heikki Kovalainen was fastest with a time of 1:19.457 with a V8 engine-equipped car. "I'm not concerned about lap times, but about aclimatising myself to the car,'' Bourdais said. "I don't want to surprise anyone. I just want to learn step-by-step how to drive this car.'' Bourdais is driving an F1 car for the first time since he tested with Arrows in 2002. "I will be able to know more with what to expect and define my next step once the tests are over,'' Bourdais said. Toro Rosso has yet to announce its drivers for the 2007 season. Bourdais won his third consecutive U.S. open wheel title in 2006, the first driver since Ted Horn in 1946-48 to win three straight crowns. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
