New Delhi:
And on Thursday, the 'wheel came full circle' in a way for Lewis Hamilton, who took some time out to go karting in Nurburgring, and also inspire some of his biggest fans.
He's the latest youth icon, having made an even bigger impact than Fernando Alonso, in his debut season. And Lewis Hamilton spent some time passing on his knowledge and experience to young racers, and also displaying his skills, at a kart track near the Nuerburgring F1 circuit, which hosts the European GP this weekend.
Interestingly, the English driver began his racing career in go-karts from the age of eight, progressing through the junior ranks before taking the European Championship in 2000 with maximum points.
"What would I say to young drivers? I would say that you always have to know what you want, be as focused and determined on your ambition - your goal and to never give up. If you really believe that you have the ability and that you can make it then never give up," said Hamilton, 2007 F1 Drivers' Championship Leader.
Hamilton leads second-placed Alonso by 12 points, in the Drivers' championship. With the season already past its halfway mark, Hamilton hopes he can put more pressure on the Spaniard, by winning on one of his favourite tracks.
"I think this has been one of the strongest circuits for me in the past. I hope it's the same for me this weekend. But it's really important that you maximise the time that you have in practice, one, two and three to make sure you have the right set up.
"And sometimes it's not easy to do that, but I do feel very comfortable here and that's a good foundation to start from so I think we will be good this weekend," he said.
His teammates will certainly hope so. The challenges though will come in the form of not just the tough circuit, but also a niggling bout of flu, which he hasn't overcome.
