Eskilstuna:
World Champion Jason Crump of Australia held off home favourite Tony Rickardsson to win the second round of this year's Speedway Grand Prix series in Sweden. Rickardsson won the first round in Poland two weeks ago and, despite finishing last in his opening race here, produced a vintage display in heat 16. The five-time world champion came from last place and overtook Denmark's Kenneth Bjerre to secure his place in the semi-finals, much to the delight of the crowd. He went on to make easy work of that semi-final with Bjarne Pedersen beating Bjerre and Sweden's Antonio Lindback for a place in the final. In the second semi-final, reigning world champion Jason Crump made the best start but 2003 title winner Nicki Pedersen cruised around the outside and went away from his rivals. Hans Andersen and Crump's fellow Australian Leigh Adams, who shared the lead with the two Pedersens after the 20 qualifying heats, were eliminated. The final started frenetically with all four riders in with a chance after the first bend. But just as Rickardsson looked like taking his second win from two rounds, the race was stopped when Nicki Pedersen took out his namesake Bjarne on the third lap. Nicki Pedersen was excluded leaving three riders in the restart. Rickardsson and the remaining Pedersen tussled for the lead at the restart but Crump cleverly chose his moment to attack and he held off the fast-charging Swede to take his first win of the season. With the 25 points from today's win, Crump now lies on 43 points, two behind series leader Rickardsson. Adams is third on 33 points. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
