The 27-year-old Frenchman clocked a best lap of one minute and 20.730 seconds in the final flurry of action on soft tyres after Briton Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes had earlier set the fastest time when the field ran on mediums.
Grosjean's best lap lifted him one-tenth of a second clear of nearest rival Spaniard Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and Mexican Sergio Perez of a seemingly revitalised McLaren team.
However, the Mexican lost control in the final seconds of the session and spun off into the barriers at turn 11. Defending triple world champion German Sebastian Vettel was fourth fastest for Red Bull ahead of Brazilian Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari and Hamilton.
Australian Mark Webber was seventh quickest ahead of German Nico Rosberg in the second Mercedes, Briton Jenson Button in the second McLaren and German Adrian Sutil of Force India.
Finn Kimi Raikkonen was 11th in the second Lotus in a session that signalled Saturday afternoon's qualifying session will be a close fought affair.
