Athens:
Friday's early stages of the Acropolis rally belonged to Marcus Gronholm, but rest of the day was Petter Solberg's. Solberg, the reigning world champion, seized control of the rally with a scintillating display to leave his rivals trailing. The Norwegian started slowly, but turned on the style in the afternoon with five consecutive stage wins. Markko Martin, second in the championship coming into the rally just a point behind leader Sebastian Loeb, had earlier suffered a disastrous morning, sliding down a bank and out of the rally on stage three. Solberg holds a 55.7-second lead in his Subaru heading into day two, with Peugeot's Harri Rovanpera second, narrowly clear of Ford driver Francois Duval. The Belgian driver finished third, 1.01.6 seconds behind Solberg, with Gronholm 1.6 seconds further back in fourth. Championship leader Sebastian Loeb is fifth. This year, the four-day Acropolis Rally started in the central Greek city of Lamia and will finish in Athens. Previously, the rally began and ended in Athens. The rally ends on Sunday.Topics mentioned in this article
