Hockenheim:
Ferrari's Michael Schumacher fired up his home crowd on Friday with the fastest time in practice ahead of the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim on Sunday. However the world champion didn't have it all his way, when he was pipped in the morning session by BAR's British test driver Anthony Davidson. The conditions were perfect for the first practice sessions at Hockenheim on Friday ahead of the German Grand Prix. Michael Schumacher didn't seem happy to be in front of his home fans as he came out and immediately redefined Juan Pablo Montoya's fastest time of 1m 16.795s for Williams with a lap in 1m 15.864s for Ferrari. But immediately afterwards BAR test driver Anthony Davidson blasted round the Hockenheim circuit in one minute 15.756 seconds to pip Schumacher by 0.108s. In the afternoon session things began to change. Antonio Pizzonia making a Formula One comeback with Williams as a stand-in for injured Ralf Schumacher put in a strong showing. His time of 1minute 15.470 seconds was enough to put his on provisional fifth spot. Jenson Button finished the day one better on fourth, but ended it badly as he rolled to a halt just past the pits with a broken Honda V10. He had lapped in 1minute 15.379 seconds and was looking for a good position on the grid. But the team had to change his engine and he will now lose 10 grid places however much faster he goes. Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya, last year's runaway winner from pole position, was third on the timesheets. His time of 1:15.167 was the exact same time he had in clinching pole position in 2003. Montoya is switching to McLaren from Williams after the season and he will be pleased with the way his new team are performing at the moment. After a strong showing in the British Grand Prix Finland's Kimi Raikkonen confirmed McLaren's progress with the second fastest time of the day. His time of 1:15.045 was just behind that of the days quickest man, Michael Schumacher. His time of 1.15.001 took the world champion a step closer towards equalling his own record of 11 victories in a season and will once again make him the man to beat on Sunday.
