Motegi:
John Hopkins grabbed provisional pole for the first time in his MotoGP career thanks to a blistering lap of one minute 47.230 seconds at the Motegi circuit in Japan on Friday. The American Suzuki rider was 0.045 seconds ahead of world champion Valentino Rossi after the first qualifying session for the Japanese Grand Prix. Hopkins was understandably pleased with the way things had gone, but he'll do well to be in the same position come the end of Saturday's final qualifying. In the 250cc category, Sebastian Porto of Argentina was the quickest man on the day. The Aprilia man posted a best of 1:52.550. Japan's Yuki Takahashi and Spain's Toni Elias were second and third respectively. Overall points' leader Andrea Dovizioso continued his domination of the 125s. The Italian Honda rider recorded a best of 1:53.385. Australia's Casey Stoner was second fastest with Hector Barbera of Spain just behind. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
