Sardinia:
Petter Solberg of Norway has made an impressive start to the Rally of Italy in Sardinia, building up a lead of more than half a minute after three stages on Friday. The world champion set down his marker from the start, with his Subaru 16.9 seconds ahead of Markko Martin's Ford after the opening stage of the Sardinian championship. Finland's Marcus Gronholm was in second overall, 31.2 seconds behind the leader, with Estonian Martin in third. Championship leader Sebastien Loeb made up lost ground after a difficult start in his Citroen. He is fourth overall, 33.4 seconds off the pace. Spain's Carlos Sainz had to make to with fifth place, 36.6 seconds behind the leader. Loeb has 92 points in the drivers' championship with four rallies left and could wrap up a first world title if he wins in Sardinia and Solberg, who has 64 points, slips up.
