New Delhi:The Honda-SIEL PGA championships begin in Delhi on Thursday. The event has a purse of Rs 30 lakh. The practice range at the Delhi Golf Club is very crowded, it being the third biggest prize money event on the Indian golf tour. Arjun Atwal and Jeev Milkha Singh who are preparing for the second round of the US PGA qualifying school are missing. According to Daniel Chopra, former champion, Honda-SIEL, "There are a lot of guys playing very well out there. Vivek has been playing well lately, Jyoti loves this course, Arjun Singh is also playing well. Then there is Gaurav. I think will it will probably be the toughest competition." The tournament this year was scheduled to be a $200,000 Asian PGA event but that didn't happen eventually on account of the US terror attacks. Arjun Singh, golfer claimed, "They couldn't co-sanction the tournament with the Asian PGA because of the problems in the United States. Besides, the players didn't want to travel. Plus it was clashing with the dates of a few qualifying schools. I'm glad that Honda-SIEL is holding the tournament." The favourite is of course Vivek Bhandari who just won the Noida Open last week and has had a couple of top three finishes in the Asian tour. The winners' cheque could have been about $40,000 if this had become an APGA event, but now it's just the Honda City car and the cheque for under Rs 5 lakh that is up for grabs.
