Ancaster: Jim Furyk patiently worked his way to the top of a crowded leaderboard to win the Canadian Open on Sunday. He shot a 5-under par 65 in cool and windy conditions for a one-stroke victory over American compatriot Bart Bryant. Set to make his fifth US Ryder Cup appearance in less than two weeks, Furyk finished with a 14-under par total of 266 on the rain-softened Hamilton Golf and Country Club course. He earned $900,000 for his second victory of the year and 12th overall. Furyk, No. 3 in the world rankings behind Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, is second on the PGA Tour money list with a career-best $6,084,016 in 21 events. The $900,000 payday also pushed his career total to $30,070,767. Out of contention Justin Rose who led after the third round fell out of contention early with a bogey on four and no birdies at all on the front nine. Jonathan Byrd took the top spot with a birdie on the fifth hole, leading the way on 12 under par. Byrd was not able to rest though as Furyk shot four birdies in his first 10 holes to move alongside at the top. Brett Quigley had a quiet round but made big noise with a brilliant tee shot on the 13th. Quigley went on to card a two under round of 68, 11 under overall and finished in fifth place. Taking lead Furyk would not settle for anything but first and he took the lead at 13 under par with a birdie on the same hole. If not for a second round 69, Sean O'Hair could have easily led the field. His birdie on the 16th moved him within one stroke of Furyk at 12 under. Bart Bryant moved into a tie with O'Hair when he chipped in on the 14th hole for birdie. Furyk increased his lead to two strokes with a birdie on the 17th to go to 14 under par. When he tapped in for par on the 18th, Furyk received a standing ovation from the gallery but he had no guarantee of a victory. Bryant moved within a stroke with a straight birdie on the 17th. He needed a birdie at the last to force a playoff but after his approach left him long on the green, his lengthy birdie attempt ran wide left and Furyk won the 2006 Canadian Open. (AP)
