California: Davis Love III pulled away from Tiger Woods and just about everyone else at the Target World Challenge by matching the tournament record of nine-under-par to build a three-shot lead on Saturday. Love's 63 tied the tournament record set last year by Padraig Harrington, which also came in the third round and gave the Irishman a six-shot lead. Harrington wound up holding off a late charge by Woods to win by two. In contrast, Love only holds a three-shot margin over K.J. Choi (65), although he won't have to worry about Woods in Sunday's final round. As most of the leaders were posting birdies on a sunny, benign afternoon at Sherwood Country Club, tournament host Tiger Woods gave up ground with a three-putt bogey at the third. Woods then hit his tee shot at the next hole into the water and bogeyed on the way to a par round of 72 that leaves him nine shots off the pace on two-under. Masters champion Mike Weir, who opened with a 75, shot a three-under-par round of 69 on Saturday and sits at four under par for the tournament. Robert Allenby sunk a tough birdie putt at the ninth hole en route to an even par 72 on Saturday. The Australian sits ten shots off the lead after three rounds. Defending champion Padraig Harrington, who began the day with a one-shot lead, dropped into third place on the leader board at five-under-par following a two-under-par round. K.J. Choi is making his first appearance in the final event of the year and would like nothing better than to end his season with a win. The Korean shot a solid round of six-under-par 65 on Saturday and sits three shots behind leader Davis Love III heading into Sunday's final round. Love was in inspirational form on Saturday and played some of his best golf since the start of the year. Putts of 20 feet and 15 feet for birdies at the ninth and tenth holes saw Love climb up the leader board. Love then easily reached the par-five 11th hole with a five-iron to set up his fourth consecutive birdie and went on to match the tournament record of nine-under-par 63 to move to 11-under-par for the tournament. Love has won four times this season, with his biggest victory of 2003 coming after a final-round of 64 at The Players Championship on a cold and windy day at Sawgrass. Although this tournament's prize money is the biggest attraction - $1.2 million of the $5 million US dollars purse will go to the winner - victory in a 16-man field that includes three of the four major champions would be a fine way to end the year.
