Tuning up for his Masters defence, Phil Mickelson shot a 7-under 65 on Sunday to move within a stroke of leader Scott McCarron with one round to play in the rain-delayed BellSouth Classic. McCarron, the 1997 and 2001 winner at the TPC at Sugarloaf, shot his second straight 69 for a 6-under 138 total on the Greg Norman-designed course. Just days before The Masters is to begin, fans flocked to see the second round of the BellSouth Classic. After two days of rain delayed the start the final rounds will be completed on Monday. Good start South Africa's Retief Goosen began the day well . First, the South African's tee shot on the par-3 11th hole, a pitching wedge, stopped well within birdie distance. Moments later, Goosen would indeed make birdie, to lower his score to 2-under par. Veteran PGA professional Tom Kite showed he still has some brilliance in his golf bag. Kite's chip onto the green on the 13th hole showed he has the touch with his short game. JL Lewis found himself with a bad lie on the 6th hole, but after some relief, played his approach onto the green to set up a birdie and a score of 2-under par, good for a tie for second place at the time. Zach Johnson also did well with his irons. Johnson's chip from off the green not only got close, the ball fell into the cup on the 7th hole. Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal carded a round of 69 that included this chip for eagle on the 13th hole. That great shot lowered his score to 2-under par. Stellar play Olazabal kept up his stellar play, and when he sank a long birdie on the 17th hole, he was at 4-under par. Defending Masters champion Phil Mickelson is playing well as he prepares for Augusta. Mickelson, always a fan favourite, also chipped in for eagle on the 13th hole. That eagle lowered his score to 5-under par, just one shot behind the leader for a round of 65. Mickelson is one of the 19 players remaining in the field who will play in the Masters, beginning Thursday at Augusta National. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
