Charlotte: Sergio Garcia overcame blustery conditions at the Wachovia Championship by playing bogey-free golf on the back nine for a one-under-par round of 71. He took a two-shot lead over Vijay Singh, defending champion Joey Sindelar and DJ Trahan on Friday. The wind calmed over the final two hours at Quail Hollow on Friday, and the scoring average dropped by a half-shot to 74.6. The course was so fast that the field hit less than 50 per cent of the fairways during the third round of the Wachovia Championships. Ireland's Padraig Harrington was one of those struggling - he went round in 75 and was two-over after two rounds. Tough conditions Tiger Woods, who had a share of the lead early in the second round, made three bogeys over his last seven holes for a 72 and he lies five shots off the lead with a two-under-par total of 142. Singh and Scott Verplank each shot 69 in the toughest conditions. Verplank, Brett Quigley (69) and Richard Johnson (72) were on a four-under total of 140, while Greg Owen, Chris DiMarco, Jim Furyk and Jeff Sluman (70) were among those on 141. Vijay Singh took the lead for the first time by playing a perfect shot off this slope to five feet at the 12th, only to give it back by getting fooled by the wind and missing the par-three 13th green by 20 metres. Still, he was in great shape heading into the weekend at five-under-par. Into the water Phil Mickelson then went into the water at the par-three 17th and finished double bogey-bogey for a 73 that left him on even-par, seven shots behind Garcia. Garcia has been hitting the ball beautifully over the first two days at Quail Hollow. The Spaniard carded two bogeys and three birdies during his second round of one-under par 71. He will be delighted at the halfway stage with his seven-under-par of 137, his first 36-hole lead in nearly four years on the US PGA Tour. (AP)
