Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez took a one shot lead in the Algarve Portuguese Open after the second round on Friday, as his bid for a place in the Ryder Cup gained momentum. Jimenez will go top of three tables if he claims his second win of the season on Sunday, the two Ryder Cup lists and the European order of merit. An error-free six-under-par 66 for a nine-under-par 135 total put the Spaniard one shot ahead of compatriot Ignacio Garrrido, Ireland's Damien McGrane and Terry Price of Australia. Spain's Miguel Angel Jiminez stepped up his bid to top both the Volvo Order of Merit and the Ryder Cup points list on Friday. The Malagan moved to the top of the leaderboard at the halfway stage of the Algarve Open de Portugal Caixa Geral de Depositos at Le Meridien Penina. Thomas Levet of France didn't make the cut, but he produced the highlight with a hole in one on the 13th. Levet's playing partner was Ian Woosnam. Woosnam carded a second round 66 for a halfway total of seven under par 137 at Penina, two shots behind Jimenez. He will be at the US Masters next week, and on this form he could be a contender. The first round overnight leader was Peter Lawrie. The Irishman ended the day with a round of 71 and lies level with Woosnam. The reigning Volvo PGA champion Ignacio Garrido ended with a round of 67 and is just one behind compatriot Jimenez with 136. Alongside him lies Australian Terry Price and Damian McGrane from County Wexford in Ireland. McGrane sunk a birdie putt on the 18th to finish with a round of 66. Jimenez has already won this year at the Johnny Walker Classic in Bangkok and is continuing his run of form in impressive fashion. He was out in 31, back in 35 and was looking for valuable Ryder Cup points.
