Lorena Ochoa won her first pro golf tournament on Sunday as she shot a four-under-par round of 68 for a one-stroke victory over Wendy Ward at the inaugural Franklin American Mortgage Championship, south of Nashville. Wendy had a nice touch on the greens early in the fourth round, and when she sank a short birdie putt on the fifth hole in the final round of the inaugural Franklin American Mortgage Championship, south of Nashville, she had reached 13-under-par. Elsewhere, from a difficult lie on the seventh hole, Stacy Prammanasudh lofted a nice chip onto the green and within a few centimetres of the cup. She would eventually finish third on a total of 274. 22-year-old Lorena Ochoa then took the lead when she made birdie on the ninth hole. The young player from Guadalajara, Mexico moved to 14-under with that birdie before sinking this curling putt at the 14th for 15-under, and a two-shot edge over Ward and Pat Hurst. Hurst then holed a difficult chip for birdie on the 15th hole before thrusting her right arm in the air as the ball found the cup. She had moved to 14-under-par, and within one shot of Ochoa. But Ochoa maintained her fine play on the greens. Once again, she pumped her fist as she sank another birdie, this one at the 16th hole. It lowered her score to 16-under-par and gave her a three-stroke lead. But Ward did not give up. She made an eagle putt at the 18th hole to move to 15-under and put a bit of pressure on Ochoa. However, Ochoa held on as her close friend Maria Baena to douse her with beer. The tap-in gave Ochoa her first-ever LPGA victory. Her four-under round of 68 was good enough for an historic maiden victory as she became the first Mexican to win an LPGA Tour event.(AP)
