New Delhi:
Delhi golfer Joyti Randhawa has just returned after a good performance at the British Open. The 32-year-old is the first Indian to complete four rounds at the prestigious British Open and only the second Indian to make the cut at a major after Jeev Milkha Singh at the US Open in 2002. Jyoti, who is ranked 99 in the world at present, finished tied for 27th at the Royal Troon in Scotland with a four round total of three over par. While Jyoti's strong showing at last week's British Open is a major milestone in Indian golf, so was Arjun Atwal's feat of becoming the first Indian to qualify for the US PGA last year. In fact, along with Randhawa and Atwal, Gaurab Ghei and Jeev Milkha Singh make for a world class line up of golfers, who have taken this sport to a new high in India. Junior golfers Junior Indian golfers are also making waves in the international circuit. Virat Bhadwar is one such 8-year-old from New Delhi. He finished third at the Junior World Golf Championship in San Diego last week. This is the second consecutive year that Virat has finished in the top three at the World Junior Championships. Last year, he had come second in his age group. With their achievements, golfers like Jyoti Randhawa and Arjun Atwal are inspiring youngsters like Virat to take to golf as a profession. And, who knows, with the growing popularity of the sport in India, 10 years down the line, it could even compete with cricket as the number one sport in the country.Topics mentioned in this article
