Under sunny skies and only a trace of wind, the third round of the Funai Classic quickly shaped up as a shootout so typical of Disney. It was so tight at the top that 19 players were within three shots of the lead before the final group had finished playing the second hole. World number one Vijay Singh, going after his fourth successive PGA Tour victory, had three putts catch the lip on the final five holes and still shot a 65. On the 18th hole, Singh's 12-foot putt rippled over the edge of the cup, as Singh let his putter dangle over his shoulders in disbelief. Mark Calcavecchia hasn't played at the Disney tournament since 1994, but had no choice this year and is making the most of it. His approach shot on 18 set up a birdie that closed a round of 65. It left him in the large group with Singh at 14-under 202 that included Tim Clark (64) and Geoff Ogilvy (67). Tough game Meanwhile, Tom Lehman took the lead on the 8th hole with a short birdie that brought him to 18 under par. Lehman had started the day in second, just one stroke behind Briny Baird. Chris DiMarco, who had a second round of 65, sank a long, quick birdie putt on the 12th hole to go 13-under-par. Scott Verplank got into contention for the second year running at Disney with a bogey-free 65 and was one shot behind at the end of the day. His birdie on 14 helped lead him to one of the best rounds of the day with seven-under-par. Lehman had a one-shot lead when he hit his drive a little too far left on the 13th hole, leaving him only 88 yards from the hole but behind a tree. Close fight Lehman took a steep swing to get the ball in the air quickly, and it just cleared the bunker and trickled another 10 feet into the cup for an eagle - his second of the day. That put him at 18-under and gave him a three-shot lead. Baird would not turn over the lead lightly. His approach shot on the 11th hole landed within feet of the cup and led to a birdie, one of five on the day for him. But on 18 he was unable to add to that total. Coming into the hole tied with Lehman at 17 under par, Baird's birdie putt rolled just wide right of the cup, forcing him to settle for par. Fortunately for Baird, Lehman's birdie putt on the final hole also rolled wide of the cup so the pair entered the clubhouse even with 199 strokes through three rounds.(AP)Topics mentioned in this article
