New Delhi:South African golfer and businessman Ernie Els is on his first visit to India.
Referred to as the big easy because of his relaxed swing and his cool temperament on the course, Els is fifth in the world golf rankings; however, he is visiting India on business.
The 37-year-old is in Delhi because of his wine business. The South African who started his own brand in 2004 was in the capital for a tie up with the Oberoi Group to promote his collection.
In fact, his personal life also seemed to have the wine connection.
"I met my wife who's from a red wine region. So me and my wife really got into the wine business. We wanted our wine to stand on its own; obviously the name would draw people's attention. But we didn't want the wine to be sold as a golfer's wine," said Ernie Els, Professional Golfer.
While his wine business is getting the due attention, in terms of golf Els has many goals to achieve.
Seeking the green jacket
While he has won three Majors, Ernie is yet to own the coveted green jacket, which is something he is working towards.
In fact, the South African, who has rarely fallen from the top five in the World rankings in the past decade, has had a good season so far.
He finished in the top three in two of six tournaments he has played this season including the Verizon Heritage.
So how easy is it really for the big easy to stay on top?
"Well, it's not easy. It takes a bit of work. Still I want to try and become world number one again. It's been 10 years since I've become number one. We all know who is the world number one at the moment so it's a very tough task."
"Tiger is a great player. I am number five at the moment but am trying to put myself up the ranking," said said Ernie Els.
It was that determination that helped him recover from a career threatening knee injury in 2005.
And it is probably the same grit that is helping him out in his businesses as well.
It seems that the 55-time PGA Tour winner has obviously found the perfect balance between teeing off and putting in the big bucks off the course.
