New Delhi:

Following India's 6-1 thrashing of Argentina to win the 7th World Junior Hockey championships in Hobart, Australia on Sunday, in Chandigarh, there was excitement at the home of Harpal Singh. Harpal is a forward and played a key role in yesterday's win. His father, Gurupreet Singh, described Harpal's passion for the game. "He used to tackle even when he was young. I would tell Harpal to study but he would disappear and go and practice. Then slowly he became famous and got to the Chandigarh level and got a good coach. Then even I got interested," said the proud daddy. But India's star in the final was Deepak Thakur, whose hattrick against Argentina made the win even sweeter. "We had drawn the pool game with Argentina earlier. Our performance was not good but in the final we played with team spirit and good co-ordination to beat Argentina." It's an important win, especially at a time when the senior team is not doing as well, say past hockey legends. Former Indian hockey team captain Zafar Iqbal, said, This team played with our own style and showed to the world that yes this style can win against any team provided we have good players like these." And the Indian team will now go into the hockey World Cup in Kuala Lumpur in March next year on a high.
