New Delhi:After winning the junior World Cup, now the focus is on how to translate that win into better results at the senior level as well. The junior World Cup is India's first major international title since they claimed the last of their eight Olympic golds at Moscow in 1980. India last won the senior hockey World Cup in 1975. Fans were euphoric at the long overdue victory and were optimistic of similar performances in the future. "It should certainly boost up the morale of the seniors also. They are also part of the same team, so I think it should help them to perform better," felt one hockey enthusiast. The sports minister Uma Bharti lauded the performance of the team and the Sports Ministry along with the Indian Hockey Federation have each announced a monetary grant of Rs 1,00,000 for each member of the victorious team. The free flowing approach which ensured 31 goals in eight games after playing the more defensive European style for many years seems to be the key to regaining the dominance India had in world hockey until the 1970s. "I think this redoubles our responsibilities. We have to do well in Kuala Lumpur otherwise there will be a lot of disappointment all around and for doing well we need efforts from the management, from the players and from everyone concerned," said K P S Gill, President of the Indian Hockey Federation. With this win, it is clear that India is one of the best teams in junior hockey and now it is upto the management to groom them for a bright future in Indian Hockey. Event shifted out Just a day after the Indian junior hockey team came home with the World Cup, comes the news that an international tournament in India is being shifted out. The Champions Challenge, which was scheduled to be played in December, will go to another venue because of the reluctance of International teams to travel to India. This inaugural tournament was meant to be a second rung event after the Champions Trophy, which features the top six hockey playing countries. That event would have served as a basis for India to qualify for the next Champions Trophy.
