Bangalore:
A new state of the art gymnasium in Bangalore's Sports Authority of India complex is the site of the Indian hockey team's initiative to stay fit. It is a part of a masterplan for Coach V Baskaran who took over as India's coach in April for his third term. With many youngsters in the team, the coach has focused specially on fitness to build a team that will revive India's traditional brand of attacking hockey. His approach has already shown results when India beat South Korea in the Azlan Shah cup in June. The Koreans are widely considered the fittest hockey team in the world. "If you can run, you can better hockey so the idea is to make the boys fitter improve their fitness and stay there," said V Baskaran, coach, Indian hockey team. To help with the fitness standards, the Indian team has also brought in Derek Knox, former Australian junior national player turned physical trainer. Knox had initially joined the team only till the World Cup, but coach Baskaran believes his services should be continued beyond the tournament. "I think it has to continue. I don't think it's temporary. We should impart systems to other people, Under 14s, Under 16s," said V Baskaran, coach, Indian hockey team. While the Indian cricket team's conditioning camp has been in the limelight, the Indian hockey team has quietly also been getting in to shape. The aim is to get fitter to play more attacking hockey when the World Cup comes around in September.Topics mentioned in this article
