New Delhi: The International Hockey Federation (FIH) announced on Tuesday that India will not host the 2011 Men's Champions Trophy, which was scheduled to take place here from December 3.
The FIH stated that the decision was taken due to the problematic governance of the sport in India and added in a release that a replacement venue will be announced within a week. "We regret that we have to move the Champions Trophy from India," said FIH President Leandro Negre. "It is difficult for the teams, the organizers and the fans. But we feel that this is the only way to maintain the integrity of our sport," said FIH President Leandro Negre.
FIH has had a long-standing tiff with the manner in which hockey is administered in India, claiming that only one body should be representative of the sport from a country. Hockey India (HI) and Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) however, have been involved in a face-off to take control of the sport here. Although talks between members of the opposing groups did take place but it eventually fell apart.
