Favourites Argentina beat the Netherlands 4-3 on sudden-death penalty strokes to win the women's field hockey World Cup final in Perth Argentina took the lead in the 27th minute when Ines Arrondo scored, but Ageeth Boombaardt tied it for the Netherlands with just three minutes left, forcing extra time at 1-1 for the third day in a row in the playoff portion of the tournament. Argentina took a 1-0 lead in the penalty stroke shootout, but the Netherlands tied it on their fifth and final try in regulation. After each team scored twice in sudden-death, defender Cecilia Rognoni put Argentina ahead 4-3 and the South Americans won it a minute later when the Netherlands failed to score. Argentina overcame several key injuries to go 7-0 in the round-robin that began on November 24, then beat hosts Australia 1-0 in the semifinals on Friday and finished the tournament with nine straight wins. Argentina defeated the Dutch in last year's Champions Trophy final in the Netherlands. Argentina had been runners-up in the World Cup three times. First-half goals from Ma Yibo and Chen Zhaoxia gave China a 2-0 win over Australia for third place earlier today. It was Australia's worst finish at a World Cup since 1986. China's first penalty corner paid dividends with Australia's Angie Skirving deflecting in Ma's cross in the 13th minute. The visitors scored again three minutes before halftime with Chen's penalty corner shot flicked off goalkeeper Nina Bonner. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
