A day after being made to taste defeat despite fighting hard against Spain, India sealed a thrilling 6-5 win against South Africa on Sunday night.
Veterans Shivendra Singh (13th, 38th minutes), Dharamvir Singh (19th, 21st minute), Tushar Khandker (36th minute) and penalty corner specialist V.R. Raghunath (penalty stroke 53rd minute) were in full flow against South Africa.
While Shivendra's field goal began the proceedings for India, the scoreline was dragged back on level terms in the next four minutes, thanks to a successful penalty stroke from Austin Smith.
While South Africa changed their game from here on to become more defensive, skill ensured that India's Dharamvir found the right side of goal twice in three minutes.
India added two more goals to their half-time lead of 3-1 but South Africa came back hard to make it 5-3 in 48 minutes.
The exchange in goals continued till the final few minutes but India managed to seal the match with the final whistle.
India will play South Africa again, on Wednesday.
