New Delhi:
A victorious Indian hockey team came home from Karachi with the Asia Cup title. The win was made even more special because of the 5-2 win over hosts Pakistan in the final. And the champions got a rousing reception at the airport today with the bhangra bands out in full force. This was a start contrast from a few days ago when the senior hockey team slipped into Delhi after a last place finish in the four-nations event in Sydney. However the juniors have given enough reason for cheer with their maiden Asia Cup title, and their 30th consecutive win since October 2002. Tushar Khandekar was the hero in the final against Pakistan with his hat trick in the 5-2 win for India. However, the star of the team was undoubtedly Sandeep Singh, the penalty corner specialist who scored a total of 16 goals in the tournament including a double hat-trick helping India to score 51 goals in 6 matches. "I hope that I will soon get a place in the senior team," said Sandeep. Meanwhile there was some special encouragement for the youngsters in the form of Dhanraj Pillay who came to the airport to offer his congratulations. with this emphatic win over arch rivals Pakistan, India now automatically qualifies to defend their world title in Holland next year and hopefully a few of the young players like Tushar Khandekar and Sandeep Singh will find a permanent place in the Indian national team.Topics mentioned in this article
