Eduardo Tubau scored a hat-trick as Spain handed a 4-0 thrashing of Pakistan in a Pool A match of the Olympic men's hockey competition here today. Eduardo's three field goals and another by Santiago Freixa took Spain's points tally to eight making them strong contenders for the semifinals since they would be playing their last league match against minnows Egypt, who are yet to open their account in the competition. Pakistan, on six points, now face the threat of being knocked out of medal race as Germany and Korea are ahead of them in points with the former being the favourite to make the last four stage from the group. The South Asian powerhouse, who came to the competition in good form, were outplayed in all the departments by their rivals with Tubau proving unstoppable with goals in the 6th, 35th and 41st minute. Freixa sealed the game for Spain with a strike from close in on the right with just seven minutes to go. Spain could have added a few more goals to the tally but for their failure to convert even once from as many as seven penalty corners. Pakistan next play Great Britain on Monday.
