BCCI chief N Srinivasan has defended the shoddy performance of Team India Down Under on Thursday saying that the side continues to have a lot of potential.
Speaking to Shekhar Gupta on NDTV's Walk the Talk, Srinivasan believed that the team can still beat any side in the world. "Even now, this team is good enough to beat anybody. This is the best team we have," he said. "We definitely felt they would do well in Australia, and I think even if you take the 1st test, there were moments when I think we were on top and for some reason or the other the Aussies got away."
Saying that the Indian Team cannot be run down, Srinivasan said knee-jerk reactions were not needed. "I think one cant really run them down. So little bit of luck rub of the green as they say and I think results would be different. We cannot win every match, series all the time, so one has to allow for that."
Srinivasan however mentioned that he was not defending the team from the defeats already suffered. "I am not defending the performance of the Indian team. I would wait and see."
India's chief selector Kris Srikkanth had earlier, also said that the current team in Australia was the best that could have been sent. "When you lose you can cite any reason. This is the best team we have at the moment. Also there are no injuries. I believe each and every member has accepted that Australia is playing better cricket," he has said on the sidelines of announcing the ODI team for the tri-series against Australia and Sri Lanka.
In Australia, Team India now has only a Test and the ODI series to prove Srinivasan and Srikkanth correct, to some extent.
