Amit Mishra conjured his third hat-trick of the Indian Premier League as Sunrisers Hyderabad scored a stunning 11-run victory against Pune Warriors at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium in Pune on Wednesday evening.
The India spinner is the first bowler to register three IPL hat-tricks - one each for Delhi Daredevils, Deccan Chargers and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Yuvraj Singh has produced two hat-tricks.
Mishra took an IPL career-best four for 19 as Pune lost four wickets in five balls to lose a low-scoring game that they had firmly in control. Mishra ensnared the Pune batsmen with a heady mix of leg-spins and googlies as the home team lost skipper Angelo Mathews, Bhuvneswar Kumar, Rahul Sharma and Ashok Dinda in the 19th over, chasing 120 for victory.
Mishra won the Man of the Match award for his all-round performance. He came good with the bat too, scoring 30 off 24 balls at a time when the Hyderabad innings was reeling at 44 for six in the 11th over. Pune looked to be in cruise mode at 101 for 5 in the 17th over when their batsmen chose to self-destruct.
"Cam (Cameron White) just told me to go for the wickets and I got a hattrick. I did not think about the sixes and fours and just kept it simple," Mishra said after his wonderful feat that gave Hyderabad their fourth win in six matches.
The world's best fast bowler Dale Steyn lauded Mishra for "pilling a rabbit out of the hat." "He scripted an amazing turnaround this season. It's the same set of boys but a very different team this time," Steyn said.
Mishra said the team's success was a collective effort. "We are working together and supporting each other," he said.
