Michael Hussey's exhilarating 95 and quality contributions from Wriddhiman Saha and Suresh Raina, followed up by an outstanding last over from Chris Morris, took Chennai Super Kings to the top of the Pepsi Indian Premier League points table as they beat Kolkata Knight Riders, the defending champions, by 14 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday.
The Chennai top order, under scrutiny after having failed to deliver collectively on a consistent basis, took the Kolkata attack apart to post an imposing 200 for 3. Though Manvinder Bisla matched up to Hussey with a poised 61-ball 92, the lack of substantial support from other batsmen and Morris' excellent final over ensured that Chennai won their fifth match on the trot as Kolkata finished on 186 for 4.
On a bright and sunny day, Hussey resumed from where he had left in his last innings against Sunrisers Hyderabad after Chennai were asked to bat by Gautam Gambhir. He dispatched the first poor delivery of the day, in the second over bowled by Shami Ahmed, for a boundary to fine leg and then hit three boundaries off L Balaji as the floodgates opened.
