Berlin:Former French Open finalist Elena Dementieva rallied to beat Mara Santangelo of Italy 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of the rain-plagued German Open on Tuesday.
Dementieva, seeded 10th, came back from 3-0 down in the final set to beat Santangelo, a member of the Fed Cup champions.
"It was tough conditions for both of us today," said Dementieva, who committed 10 double faults in the strong winds. "I'm just happy to come off the court with a win."
Chakvetadze, Ivanovic advance
Two other seeded players also advanced through numerous rain delays - ninth-seeded Anna Chakvetadze of Russia defeated Samantha Stosur of Australia 3-6, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (5), and No 12 Ana Ivanovic of Serbia routed Laura Granville of the United States 6-2, 6-1.
The top-seeded players - led by Justine Henin and Amelie Mauresmo - open on Wednesday at the clay-court event, a major warmup for the French Open.
"Everybody knows I like it here. I've had a lot of success here," Henin said. "The goal is to get in some matches and get ready for the French."
The top-ranked Belgian won at Roland Garros in 2003, '05 and '06 after twice winning the German Open and losing last year's final to Nadia Petrova. Henin will start against German wild card Tatjana Malek, who finished off her match suspended from Monday 6-1, 6-3 against Vasilisa Bardina of Russia.
Also in Tuesday play, Yan Zi of China defeated Kristina Barrois of Germany 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to line up a second-round match against Mauresmo, Martina Muller of Germany topped Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 6-0, 6-2, Meilen Tu of the United States edged Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, and Elena Likhovtseva of Russia downed Emilie Loit of France 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.
