Rome:Svetlana Kuznetsova and Jelena Jankovic advanced to the third round of the Italian Open on Wednesday.
The second-seeded Kuznetsova beat Mara Santangelo 6-3, 6-3, and Jankovic eliminated 16-year-old Austrian qualifier Tamira Paszek 6-3, 6-4.
"The first match is always hard. The surface is a little different from last week," said Kuznetsova, who lost to Ana Ivanovic on Sunday in the German Open final. "I'm playing very good tennis though."
Also, sixth-seeded Dinara Safina beat Kaia Kanepi 7-6 (5), 6-2 and 10th-seeded Elena Dementieva eliminated Catalina Castano 6-4, 6-3.
Safina, last year's runner-up, struggled with her consistency, but was helped by her Estonian opponent's 10 double faults.
"I was very nervous at the beginning. I couldn't find my game," Safina said. "I'm going to work on it now and hopefully tomorrow it will be better."
