Paris:
Anna Kournikova and Richard Krajicek withdrew from the French Open on Thursday because of injuries. Kournikova's bad left thigh forced her to quit during her most recent WTA Tour match, in the first round at Charleston, South Carolina, on April 9. She's won just one of six tour-level matches in 2003, beating Henrieta Nagyova in the opening round at the Australian Open in January. That ended the Russian's streak of four consecutive first-round losses at Grand Slam events. Kournikova peaked in the rankings at No. 8, most recently in May 2001, but she has yet to win a singles title and is now ranked 78th. Krajicek, the 1996 Wimbledon champion, told French Open organizers he was pulling out because of an injured elbow. The Dutchman had career-threatening right elbow surgery in November 2000. He made the quarterfinals at Wimbledon last year in just his second tournament since that operation and has a 6-6 match record this season. Other French Open withdrawals so far include Pete Sampras, Marat Safin and Tommy Haas. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
