Great day for Belgium

Paris: For Belgian fans, Tuesday was a lovely day at the French Open. The clouds that had been spilling out rain all morning closed up in time for two Belgian women to zip through their matches and reach the semifinals at Roland Garros. Second-seeded Kim Clijsters and fourth-seeded Justine Henin-Hardenne have made it this far before at the world's premier clay-court tournament. But in 2001, they faced each other in the semifinals - meaning only one Belgian made it to the final. Unlike that year, when Clijsters won but lost the trophy to Jennifer Capriati, this time the tiny nation can keep rooting for an unprecedented all-Belgian Grand Slam final. And many flag-waving Belgian fans braved the morning showers and a Paris transport strike to do just that. "There's so many Belgians here," a beaming Clijsters said after beating Conchita Martinez of Spain 6-2, 6-1. "For the Belgians, it feels like a Belgian Grand Slam," said Clijsters, who next faces unseeded teenager Nadia Petrova of Russia. (AP)
