Doha: Top-seeded Roger Federer of Switzerland advanced to the second round of the $1 million Qatar Open on Tuesday by beating qualifier Andrei Stoliarov of Russia 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-4. Second-seeded Albert Costa of Spain also advanced, beating Andrea Gaudenzi of Italy 6-3, 6-4 at the Khalifa Tennis Complex. Yevgeny Kafelnikov, the fourth seed, crashed out of the first ATP tournament of the year after losing to Fernando Vicente of Spain 6-2, 7-5. In another upset, seventh-seeded Nicolas Escude of France lost to Stefan Koubek of Austria 7-6 (5), 6-2. Ninth-seeded Jan-Michael Gambill of the United States easily beat Ivo Hueberger of Switzerland 6-3, 6-3 and No. 8-seed Fabrice Santoro of France beat Felix Mantilla of Spain 6-3, 6-3. (AP)
