Hyderabad:
Leander Paes on Tuesday pulled out of the Asian Hopman Cup because of injury in a bid to preserve himself for next month's Asian Games in Doha. Sania Mirza, who was supposed to pair up with Paes at the tournament at Hyderabad, will now team up with Rohan Bopanna. "He has to do what is better for himself. Obviously he wants to save himself for the Asian Games. He was playing with taped fingers yesterday and we saw it. He is hurt,'' said Sania Mirza. Leander's absence has disappointed his fans who were looking ahead to watching him play in Hyderabad. "Leander is Leander. Whoever is going to substitute cannot certainly match him. If he would been here, they would have played 2-3 games together and that would have certainly helped them for the Asian Games," said Narendranath, Sania Mirza's Coach. The Asian Hopman Cup will see the best six teams from Asia. Every team will play one men's singles, one women's singles and a mixed doubles match. The winner of this $70,000 tournament will play in the Hopman Cup in Perth in January. China and Chinese Taipei are going to be the toughest teams in this Asian Hopman Cup. However, the Indian team will fancy its chances, with top seeds Tamrine Tanasugaran and Paradon Srichapan pulling out of the tournament.Topics mentioned in this article
